Cashier (Full Time, Rotating Shifts)

Job Summary

Performs all cashier functions. Performs reconciliation of cash on hand at the beginning and completion of shifts while supporting all aspects of the retail areas.  Maintains the supplies, general appearance, cleanliness and sanitation of the cafeteria server and dining room. Frequently stocks retail coolers, serves food, and collects and distributes supplies to retail outlets.

Job Specific Duties

  • Performs all cashier function; change making, accurately ring up sales, making corrections to monetary errors, balances drawer, prepares bank deposits. Orders cash in accordance with guidelines. 
  • Follows established standards for stocking, restocking rotating, displaying and storing food and food related supplies (e.g. lids, cups, napkins, chips, sugar, sodas, breads, and muffins). 
  • Prepares cashier reports as required. Accountable for using cash register and being able to explain pricing methodology. Ensures less than $5.00 overage and/or shortages per shift. 
  • Performs reconciliation of cash on hand at the beginning and completion of shifts. Receives lock box deposits and posts appropriately. 
  • Participates and attends at least 75% of all departmental meetings/in services in an effort to learn better methods to support the SEI goals of 96% satisfaction. 
  • Ensures infection control and sanitation by washing hands and using gloves as required. Ensures food temperatures are appropriate.
  • Ensures positive customer experiences by greeting all customers in a warm and professional manner. Achieves a minimum of 85% rating on the secret shopper reviews Quality Assurance (QA) process. 
  • Follows Board of Health and department sanitation procedures. Maintains cashier station and dining room in a clean and orderly condition. Wipes down all tables and condiments. 
  • Assists customers/patients in a friendly and polite manner whenever in need of assistance. 
  • Ensures customer satisfaction by responding to customer needs while demonstrating a positive attitude. 
  • Labels, dates, checks and documents food items for freshness and rotates them following the FIFO (First In, First Out) method.           
  • Maintains a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events to keep store operating to standards and to set a positive example for the shift team.
  • Maintains the work area in a clean and organized condition at all times.      
  • Ensures that workstations are maintained clean and fully stocked (register stands, hot buffet station, hot and cold wells, salad bars and beverage stations).
  • Covers all position while supporting coworkers breaks. 

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Completion of SafeStaff Food Handler training program required within 30 days of hire
  • Cashier experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High school education or equivalent preferred
  • Healthcare experience preferred
  • Accounting or bookkeeping experience preferred
  • Knowledge of e-cashiering and reporting preferred
  • 1 year experience in the preparation and serving of food and beverages preferred
  • Ability to perform calculations and use simple mathematical principles
  • Knowledge of infection control and sanitation
  • Knowledge of menu items and pricing
  • Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with customers and co-workers
  • Ability to communicate sufficiently well in English both verbally and in writing to request supplies and properly label food items
  • Knowledge of Spanish is helpful
  • Able to operate commercial coffee-maker equipment in high-traffic areas
  • Ability to learn appropriate software application(s)
  • Able to follow simple verbal instructions to accomplish repetitive tasks
  • Able to use and maintain food service equipment (e.g., microwave, blender, thermometer, refrigerator, patient food carts, scale)
  • Able to float and cover in other areas of the Food & Nutrition Services department when needed
  • Able to work during peak hours which may include mornings, evenings, and weekends
