Chemistry Laboratory Supervisor (Full Time, Days)

Job Summary

Perform laboratory test for clinical diagnosis adhering to guidelines of licensing and regulatory agencies. Works under the supervision of the Chief of Pathology and Clinical Laboratories and the Director of Operations.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • 5 years of Lab supervisory experience.
  • Florida State License - Lab Supervisor required.
  • Prior experience in the field of Medical Technology.

Job Specific Duties:
Safety and Quality:
  • Responsible for application of Key Quality Indicators (turnaround time, physician satisfaction).  Proactively monitors and implements systems to achieve and/or surpass team productivity/goals/ (CEI).  F: Daily/T: 2 hours/ R: Individual
  • Conducts parallel studies, evaluates new instrumentation, and implements new test procedures per CAP standards. F: Daily/ T: 1 - 8 hours/ R: Individual
  • Identifies and manages lean processes in department overseen by director. F: Daily/T: 30 minutes/ R: Individual
  • Reports critical values within standard of 30 minutes to Physicians and Residents/RN. F: Weekly/ T: 30 - 60 minutes/R: Individual 
  • Demonstrates and ensures proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) indication and use. F: Daily T:15 minutes/ R: Individual
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and calibrations on instruments and equipment, and maintains cleanliness of instruments, equipment, and area. F: Weekly/ T: 60 minutes/ R: Individual
Scheduling:
  • Acts as supervisor in charge of all aspects of communication and oversight during specified weekends.  F: Monthly/ T: 16 hours/ R: Individual
  • Oversees and supervises day to day operations and staffing; reacts accordingly to unplanned events and challenges while assuring quality services. Performs data collection, analysis, and reporting.        F: Daily/T: 2 hours/ R: Shared
  • Reviews schedules, makes Chemistry assignments, uses flex options and proactively aligns the schedule with volume/census fluctuation. Collaborates with team and monitors on an ongoing basis.   F: Daily T: 30 min R: Individual
Leadership
  • Ensures department meets/exceeds and sustains Service & Clinical Index scores, metrics; conducts huddles, and communicates Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers (HCAHPS) results. F:Daily/ T:60 - 120 minutes/ R: Shared
  • Provides timely mentoring and coaching to Med Techs to ensure quality test results and accuracy, fosters staff empowerment, open communication, leads and guides staff to build an engaged team.        F: Daily T: 4 hrs. R: individual
  • Manages procedures including time/attendance, and provides input to progressive disciplinary action in a timely and accurate manner.  F: Weekly/T:30 minutes/ R: Individual 
  • Accountable to achieve specific budget targets on an annual basis; proactively addresses any variances greater than 5% with Director. F: Quarterly/ T: 8 hours/ R: Individual
  • Monitors and evaluates staff competencies by direct observation, blind tests, and QC, including following all regulatory requirements with CAP survey, FDA, CMS, and DNV. F Daily/T: Bi-annual for 3 weeks/ R: Individual
  • Participates in Lab Committee and CAP Inspection meetings. F: Monthly/ T: 2 hours/ R: Individual
  • Reviews instrumentation, processes, re-agents and storage to ensure compliance on a daily basis.          F: Daily/  T: 2 hours/ R: Individual
  • Creates, updates, and implements policy and procedures to reflect federal guidelines. Works to ensure approval of all policies.  F: Monthly/ T: 1 - 4 hours/ R: Individual
  • Ensures inventory in stock is aligned with the regulatory requirements, and collaborates with purchasing department to order supplies. F: Weekly/ T: 1 - 2 hours/ R: Shared
  • Conducts linear tests to validate requirements as set forth in the testing parameters. F: Weekly/ T: 1 hour/ R: Individual 
  • Responsible for daily benchwork based on workflow and processing time. F: Weekly/ T: 1 – 8 hours  R: Individual
  • Assists Lab leadership in monthly review of statistics and man-hour productivity, projects and budgets.  Prepares formal reports explaining variances. F: Monthly/ T: 3 hours/ R: Individual
  • Provides Key Performance Indicator data – TAT turnaround time.  F: Monthly/ T: 2 hours/ R: Individual
  • Orients, trains and evaluates Medical Technologists regarding policies and procedures of the Lab department. F: Monthly/ T: 2 hours/ R: Individual 
  • Assists Lab leadership in preparing annual departmental capital and operational budget requested for chemistry equipment needed in the Lab; selects equipment. Performs separate analysis to present results regarding needs for equipment. F: Quarterly/ T: 4 hours/ R: Individual 
  • Accountable to participate in the recruiting, selection, and evaluation of technical staff. F: Monthly/ T: 1 – 3 hours/R: Shared
Common Duties:
  • Maintains accountability by ensuring compliance thru timely completion of licensures, certifications, all competencies, health requirements (PPD, N95, Flu, etc.), and education requirements. F: Monthly-Quarterly / T: 2 hours/ R: Individual
  • Maintains accountability and timekeeping expectations as outlined by MCHS Timekeeping and Attendance policy & procedures. Ensures behavior is compliant with communication standards. F: Weekly /T: 2 hours / R: Individual
  • Ensures that behavior meets/exceeds Targeted Service Scores as measured by the Service Index and/or the internal departmental Service survey. F: Daily/T: 8 hours/ R: Individual
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • Ability to communicate promptly, clearly and courteously, both verbally and writing with co-workers and customers.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze information to perform laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to use computer to enter and access patient data and accurately relay patient test results to appropriate person.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform laboratory techniques and use laboratory instruments.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and adheres to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Able to work cooperatively and constructively with physicians, patients, families and co-workers.
  • Ability to problem solve to adapt standard clinical procedures to the individual client's needs.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and react calmly under stressful conditions.
