Chief Perfusionist

Job Summary

Responsible for the oversight and coordination of patient care, including clinical and operational activities, personnel, strategic planning and fiscal activities for Perfusion Services. Provides perfusion coverage for all open-heart procedures and offers stand-by on all closed heart procedures/cardiac catheterization lab procedures.  Responsible for developing and maintaining a team of Perfusionists to accomplish coverage.  Jointly responsible with the ECLS Program Leader for the management and coordination of patient care whenever extracorporeal therapy or perioperative, blood management services are needed, including personnel and fiscal activities. Maintain a commitment to seeking out and developing best practices through professional networking and institutional quality improvement projects.

Job Specific Duties

  • Provides business oversight for areas, including CPB in OR, ECMO services, apheresis, platelet gel production, cell saver, CPS/ECMO/VAD transport, heart failure therapy, organ proc., and VAD mgmt.
  • Management for all patients requiring extracorporeal life support during (air/ground) including, ECMO, ventricular assist device (VAD), and balloon pump.
  • Management for ECMO/VAD/CPS device patients from candidate evaluation, selection, priming emergency management, coagulation management, and short/long term follow-up care.
  • Provide patient, family, and staff education for areas of responsibility.
  • Responsible for the introduction, development, training, management, and safety of all extracorporeal systems/perfusion services throughout the organization.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and standards of care with continuous quality improvement activities for ECMO, Heart Transplant/VAD, etc.
  • Develop and maintain ECMO/VAD/CPS technologies, quality control, analysis, and dissemination of data to ECMO, VAD, and teams.
  • Serve as resource to multidisciplinary team, caring for ECMO, VAD, and patients. Providing expertise in device operation and troubleshooting.
  • Provides coaching, counseling, and mediation to ensure the staff works effectively. Provides training on procedures and processes. Manages talent management, recruiting, department expenses, and budgets.
  • Responsible for and promotes/practices cost containment through lean process methodology.
  • Responsible for the department day-to-day operations and implements standards and financial practices. Plans, develop, and implements methods and procedures. Responsible for department budget and overall expenses.
  • Ensures highest integrity for the business operations. Oversees the development of capital and operating budgets through collaboration with Leader. Presents department budgets to leadership.
  • Strategically positions the department to react effectively to unplanned circumstances, demands, and challenges facing the industry while creating revenue enhancements and cost reduction practices.
  • Ensure ongoing assessment and maintenance of staff competencies through creation of a systematic process to ensure clinical competencies, alignment with regulatory requirements, and accuracy and completeness of clinical documentation.
  • Oversee learning experiences and mentoring of new and experienced staff across the adult and pediatric perfusion teams, as well as, for the Associate Chiefs and ECLS Director.
  • Utilize performance improvement data to plan for staff development and continuing education.  Recruit, coach, and counsel in conjunction with the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery and Administrator Heart Institute and aligned with strategies and goals of Cardiovascular and Perioperative Services.

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree of science, Perfusion   (Required)
  • OTHER Board certification in Cardiovascular Perfusion and good standing throughout employment
  • CPR BLS -American Heart Association BLS active and in good standing throughout employment
  • More than 7 years experience in cardiovascular perfusion services
  • Fellow of Pediatric Perfusion

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Complies with hospital safety regulations and infection control policies.
  • High level of clinical/technical knowledge in cardiovascular perfusion services.
