Dental Assistant/Sterile Coordinator (Full Time, Day shift)

Job Summary

Responsible for processing all reusable instruments and trays through decontamination process, prep and package, sterilization, storage, and distribution. Dispenses all direct orders received. Prepares case carts and supplies OR requests. Maintains efficient inventory of all supplies. Follows AAMI, OSHA, and AORN standards and guidelines.

Job Specific Duties

  • Assembles, sterilizes, records, and stores all reusable instruments, trays and carts. Decontaminates all reusable instruments, trays, and carts using proper equipment. 
  • Evaluates all instruments, carts, and equipment for cleanliness and proper functioning ability; notifies designated supervisor of any equipment repair. 
  • Follows AAMI, OSHA, and AORN guidelines. Monitors inventory and assures supplies are adequate, properly stored, and rotated.
  • Performs, reviews, records, and reports all tests and printouts. 
  • Records all instruments, trays, and carts received and dispensed. Responds to telephone and operating room intercom promptly, clearly, and politely. 
  • Executes clear  concise education information for parents/patients. Provides parents with post- treatment, sedation  OR verbal instructions as well as written information when indicated.
  • Provides for patient safety. Greets parents, assists patients, and checks with parent and by reading armband to identify scheduled patient before beginning any procedure. 
  • Reviews, maintains and documents patient information in the computer thoroughly, accurately and in a timely manner. Obtains consent from parents when indicated.
  • Takes X-rays to assure the highest degree of diagnostic information with the least amount of exposure. Follows hospital and departmental infection control policies. 
  • Works directly with the Pediatric Dental Attending, Residents, and other specialists in the dental clinic and operating room. 
  • Performs designated expanded duty functions permitted by the Florida Board of Dentistry. Provides assistance with behavior, monitors patient with nitrous oxide and never leaves them unattended. 

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Graduate of Dental Assisting School or Expanded duties certified  
  • American Heart Association AED must maintain active and in good standing throughout employment.
  • EFDA - Expanded Duties Cert
  • 1-3 years Experience in dental assisting

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Nitrous Oxide Certification preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to demonstrate evidence of clinical expertise.
  • Highest quality skills as an expanded duties assistant.
  • Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Ability to problem solve to adapt standard clinical procedures to the individual client's need.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and react calmly under stressful conditions.
  • Sedation course strongly suggested.
  • Basic knowledge and use of computer and printers and/or the ability to learn appropriate software applications.
