Job Summary
Plans, organizes, controls, and supervises operational and staffing activities in pharmacy. Possess a thorough understanding of state and federal laws governing pharmacy services. Recommends innovations in pharmacy practice and function of the pharmacy to Administration and carries out mutually agreed upon programs. Responsible for providing clinical leadership, utilizes effective problem-solving strategies, and applies evidence-based practice to improve client interactions and manage costs. Oversee and optimize the flow of department and provide exceptional services for delivery of safe patient care.
Qualifications
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or PharmD from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy required.
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS - must maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
- Florida Pharmacist License in good standing throughout employment
- Experience working in a Pediatric acute care hospital
- 4-7 years of experience as a Pharmacist
- Experience using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and pharmacy information systems
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures achievement of target quality indicators for CEI (clinical interventions, medication errors, dosage dispense, etc.). Proactively monitors and implements systems to achieve and surpass CEI/goals.
- Identifies and manages lean processes in department overseen by lean office.
- Monitors and investigates medication discrepancies to ensure medication administration practices are being followed per the medication administration processes.
- Reviews incident reports, implement a plan of action, and monitors results to drive efficiencies in clinical and operational excellence.
- Oversees and supervises daily operations and staffing; edits and reacts to unplanned events and challenges while assuring quality services and patient directed care.
- Reviews schedules, uses flex options, and proactively aligns the schedule with volume/census fluctuation and monitors on an ongoing basis.
- Accountable to conduct client rounding to ensure departmental satisfaction with pharmacy services. Proactively takes action to correct any inefficiencies in processes and problem solve with key findings.
- Actively contributes to the pharmacy department economic efforts and formulary management; develops and implements cost reduction strategies to maintain costs within budget and realize cost reduction opportunities.
- Develop and enforces policies and procedures that ensure appropriate, cost-effective, and safe medication use and maintain the approved hospital formulary.
- Maintains an active role in the Medication Mgmt Process PI/Med Safety, Sedation, ROC, EMC, EMR, IT improvement, PEDSIT, EOC, ASP, RAC, Patient Safety, SDPP, Medication Error review, Infectious Disease, and throughput.
- Maintains medication inventory supplies at defined PAR levels for the main pharmacy and remote sites to meet daily patient care needs and annual budget goals.
- Manages and maintains departmental quality control programs related to medication storage, preparation, and dispensing and medication incident reports as appropriate.
- Manages automated dispensing technology (RX Auditor), other pharmacy operations technology, and information systems, and consults as an expert in these areas.
- Manages controlled substances according to state and federal regulations.
- Responsible for assisting the Leader with department operations strategic planning, goals, and objectives that are consistent with the Health System goals.
- Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining operations orientation and training plan for technicians, tech students, and professionals. Completing all training and orientation documentation as required.
- Oversees unit inspections to ensure compliance with federal and state laws (labeling, non-expired, correct temperature, etc.) and analyzes the data/documents per policy and procedure.
- Accountable to manage RX auditor in determining the need for investigation and follow up by the respective units and end users.
- Provides timely mentoring and coaching to clinical staff and support staff to ensure quality of care, fosters staff empowerment, open communication, leads, and guides staff to build an engaged team.
- Directly manages staff from hiring to employment separation while supervising staff through orientation, training, annual reviews within established guidelines, and scope of responsibility.
- Manages procedures including payroll, time/attendance, and progressive disciplinary action in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ensures the completion and update of staff competencies, regulatory requirements, credentials, and accuracy.
- Accountable to manage the procurement, usage, and distribution of all controlled substances across MCHS per regulatory standards and Health System policies and procedures.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Two years in a leadership role in a acute care environment preferred.
- Project Management experience preferred.
- Florida consultant license or eligible preferred.
- Proficient with computers, EMR and Microsoft Office experience preferred.
- Ability to assess patient care conditions and evaluate patient's response to medication therapy regimens.
- Ability to comprehend and analyze information.
- Ability to coordinate the sequence of an operation or a process.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision making.
- Ability to operate equipment and pharmacy information systems.
- Ability to provide direct supervisory oversight for professional and technical staff related to medication preparation and dispensing.
- Knowledge of Lean processes and business redesign.
- Knowledge of pharmacokinetic and pharmacotherapeutic properties of medications.
- Strong customer service, problem solving, critical thinking, time management, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to positively influence, hold self, and others accountable.
- Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team and lead a team to achieve business results.
- Ability to provide direction, coaching/mentor staff, and redirect unacceptable behaviors.
