Job Summary
Responsible for the coordination of activities related to the Mobile Dental Unit program and outreach initiatives. Serves as a liaison with external agencies and supports the delivery of dental care services in the Dental Clinic and community-based settings using portable dental equipment. Responsible for the coordination of activities and safe transport, setup, operation, and breakdown of portable dental equipment and supplies, assisting the dentist and/or dental hygienist during clinical procedures, and performing patient registration duties.The role requires frequent travel using the employee's personal vehicle to transport equipment and supplies to various offsite locations. When not providing services in the community, the Dental Assistant will support day-to-day operations in the main dental clinic, including chairside assisting, patient registration, sterilization, and other assigned duties.
Job Specific Duties
- Responsible for the coordination of activities related to the Mobile Dental Unit program. Serves as the liaison between NCH’s dental department, social agencies and safety net providers.
- Serves as the liaison for patients identified by the mobile program who require follow-up care in fixed dental facility.
- Welcomes patients to the offsite clinic and assists with check-in and registration. Verifies patient identity, demographic information, and insurance details in accordance with organizational policies.
- Performs designated expanded duty functions permitted by the Florida Board of Dentistry. Provides assistance with behavior and monitors patient with nitrous oxide and never leaves them unattended.
- Works under the direct supervision of the Dentist in providing care to pediatric patients undergoing dental treatment including performing prophylaxis (supra-gingival) cleaning as part of the dental treatment.
- Prepares and maintains dental instruments, supplies, and equipment in compliance with infection control and sterilization protocols.
- Provides expertise with appropriate approaches to small children, children with autism, children confined to wheelchairs, and children with developmental delay.
- Ensures patient safety with papoose (when necessary) for patients unable to sit for procedures unassisted.
- Executes clear & concise education information for parents/patients. Provides parents with post- treatment, sedation & OR verbal instructions as well as written information when indicated.
- Ensures clinic operatory supply levels are par and ensures appropriate staff are notified when master inventory levels drop to re-order status.
- Checks all equipment for proper function and cleanliness. Notifies designated staff if equipment is not operating properly and needs repair.
- Answers, screens, and routes incoming calls. Liaisons with insurance companies and other hospital departments. Schedules appointments for patients while providing service in offsite locations.
- Reviews, maintains, and documents patient information in the computer thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely manner. Obtains consent from parents.
- Takes x-rays to assure the highest degree of diagnostic information with the least amount of exposure. Follows hospital and departmental infection control policies.
- Responsible for preparing for procedures, providing supplies and instruments during procedures, and post-procedure clean-up.
- Maintains appropriate records and documentation for internal and external regulatory purposes.
- Provides access for the patients and their families with friendly interaction and communication. Provides assistance or help to enter the Dental Mobile Unit.
- Safely transports portable dental equipment and supplies to and from offsite clinic locations using personal vehicle.
- Loads, unloads, assembles, and disassembles portable dental units, chairs, and related equipment.
- Conducts routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of portable dental equipment. Ensures all portable equipment is cleaned, disinfected, and stored properly after each use.
Qualifications
Minimum Job Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of Dental Assisting or Expanded Duties Certified
- American Heart Association AED - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
- EFDA - Expanded Duties Cert - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
- Active and valid State of Florida driver’s license with an approved driving record pursuant to our policy and maintained throughout employment - reliable personal vehicle required.
- 1-3 years of dental assisting experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Nitrous Oxide Certification preferred
- Experience with dental or medical registration systems preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Dentrix and Dexis highly desirable
- Ability to work independently and adapt to changing environments
- Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families, and co-workers
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- Ability to demonstrate evidence of clinical expertise
- High quality skills as an expanded duties assistant
- Ability to problem solve to adapt standard clinical procedures to the individual client's need
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and react calmly under stressful conditions
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to lift, carry, and transport dental equipment weighing up to 50 lbs
