Job Summary
The Patient Safety Advisor serves as an internal consultant and key driver of amazing patient care, a strong safety culture, and safety for all across Nicklaus Children's Health System. Applies modern safety principles, including systems thinking, human‑centered design, and proactive risk‑identification, to build learning systems, reduce preventable harm, and strengthen everyday reliability. Develops and executes patient safety strategies, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to understand real‑world work and co‑design improvements, and supports safety initiatives through targeted coaching and training. Uses continuous improvement methodologies to advance system wide reliability and drive sustainable change.
Job Specific Duties
- Coordinates resources, improvement projects, and educational efforts which promotes the Health System’s Quality and Patient Safety Plan, healthcare initiatives and mission.
- Responsible for developing and delivering patient safety educational courses to all levels of staff.
- Collaborates with stakeholders to integrate corrective actions and improvements in patient safety into clinical and non-clinical operations.
- Leads, facilitates discussions, and drives safety culture and patient, staff, and visitor safety initiatives and continuous improvement.
- Analyzes and tracks patient safety improvement projects and other strategic initiatives.
- Collects, analyzes, and shares patient safety data while helping to operationalize the Solutions for Patient Safety strategy at Nicklaus Children’s Health System.
- Prioritizes and ensures accuracy of information contained in reports/presentations.
- Leads and proactively manages changes in project scope, identifies potential crises, and devises contingency plans.
- Communicates project status and deliverables with leadership. Responsible for documentation of improvement activities.
- Collaborates with stakeholders to develop and implement policies, procedures, and guidelines that promote patient safety and align with regulatory standards.
- Serves as primary contact for patient safety-related data and reports for hospital leadership.
- Assists leaders with strategic goal development and monitoring of Culture of Safety Results, Patient Safety metrics, and external presentations.
- Presents and communicates data analysis and performance improvement recommendations and strategies to project teams, leadership, and task force groups.
- Responsible for ensuring the timely progress of teams focused on project execution, project management, and status reporting within the organization.
- Oversees internal and external collaborations and business partnerships.
- Translates strategy into executable plans, milestones, timelines, and deliverables.
Qualifications
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field
- Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS), Certified Professional in Human Factors in Health Care (CPHFH), or Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) required within 24 months from date of hire
- 7-10 years of demonstrated experience in safety culture and patient safety related work
- Advanced experience with Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Outlook, SharePoint, Excel,
PowerPoint, Access, Visio, and Canva Pro
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration or related field preferred.
- Clinical experience (nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapy) helpful.
- Ability to use logical and scientific thinking to interpret technical data; understands and effectively applies concepts of data integrity and validation.
- Able to support director-level leadership through data interpretation, identification of gaps and opportunities, recommending and developing action plans to improve performance on identified key quality metrics.
- Able to deliver engaging, informative, and well-organized presentations and training to groups of up to 100 Executives, Directors, Managers, and front line staff.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to collaborate and work effectively in cross-functional teams and present patient safety concepts, ideas, and recommendations to others.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of protected health information and other sensitive information.
- Ability to lead and manage multiple projects by setting priorities, collaborating in a team environment, and utilizing effective time management skills.
- Ability to develop and manage process improvement proactive safety projects, and intensive improvement events.
- Able to react effectively to unplanned circumstances, demands and challenges facing the hospital, and in the particular assigned area of responsibility.
- Strong problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills.
- Applies the principles of evidence-based practice, operational and service excellence, and effective methodologies for goal-setting or benchmarking.
- Ability to teach quality science and proactive safety improvement classes and provide project mentorship and coaching.
