Job Summary

Performs a variety of supervisor functions to ensure efficient operations, high level of cleanliness, quality, and service throughout the Environmental Services function. Responsible for daily oversight of regulatory standards, financial stewardship of department operations, and collaboration with other management and supervisory team members to support the department in its daily functions.

Job Specific Duties

  • Supervises the necessary resources needed for the Environmental Services department under assigned scope and makes recommendations to hiring, promoting and annual staff performance reviews. 
  • Attends meetings and training sessions as scheduled. Assists manager in providing meeting/training and leads session(s) in the absence of manager.  
  • Establishes and annually reviews standard operating procedures for all staff in accordance with established policy and practices of the facility. 
  • Orients, trains, coaches, develops, and supervises all EVS staff under scope, including room cleans, floor care needs, waste stream management, linen management, etc. 
  • Assists manager with planning and executing work schedules, areas of assignments, and job duties to ensure adequate EVS services are rendered to all areas of the hospital. 
  • Prepares, coordinates, and follows up on daily operations of the Environmental Services department.
  • Regularly inspects and evaluates physical condition of facility, recommends painting, repairs, furnishings, special projects, and generates work order requirements. Reports safety hazards and defects. 
  • Assures staff follows guidelines in regards to timekeeping, uniform, attendance, etc. 
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the cleaning and disinfection principles and requirements, proper chemical, equipment usage, and labor requirements for maintenance of furniture, furnishings, interior finishes for all areas of responsibility. 
  • Assists manager with scheduling and oversight of facility EVS-related work projects, to include and not limited to floor care related projects. 
  • Conducts regular staff meetings (huddles) and communicates with members of other departments to coordinate EVS activities and services.
  • Ensures that all storage areas are maintained, clean, and organized. Ensures proper supply control guidelines are followed and trains staff in the use supplies and equipment. May assist as needed with conducting inventory, ordering supplies/linen.
  • Performs daily rounds of all facility areas at the beginning of each shift and regularly throughout the shift; inspects staff work performance. 
  • Ensures all cleaning and disinfecting agents are appropriately utilized, labeled and stored.
  • Participates in established QA program by completing timely and thorough inspections as required. Actively participates and contributes to efforts to improve patient experience and cleanliness scores and key departmental performance metrics. 
  • Performs quality improvement initiatives under direction of EVS manager. Conducts rounding activities to ensure environmental hygiene in all areas assigned.  Prepares necessary reporting to manager(s) and document results. 
  • As needed, supports monitoring of the bed tracking system and ensures EVS response times are achieved. Prepares reports to document results, collaborating with the EVS manager to develop improvement activities. 
  • Adheres to all organizational safety, risk management, and infection control and prevention standards. Promotes a culture of patient safety through observation and education. 
  • Responds to emergency calls and multiple priorities as needed to coordinate staffing changes and minimize disruption. 
  • Supervises a waste program that separates, packages and disposes of all waste according to all regulations.  
  • Takes a customer centered approach when addressing the needs of and interacting with patients, visitors, guests, team members and other health care workers. Responds to concerns and requests with a sense of urgency and takes corrective action to including timely follow up. 
  • In collaboration with manager and other leaders, ensures leadership coverage for weekend shifts. 

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

  • 2-4 years of experience in Environmental Services (or) at least 1 year of experience in Environmental Services at NCHS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Prior experience supervising employees highly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing, to meet the job requirements.
  • Reacts calmly under stressful conditions and relates cooperatively and constructively with clients and co-workers to resolve complex problems.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions to solve complex problems and file basic reports.
